Services

Exhibition Planning

I help organizations move from proposal to finished installation plan, while controlling equipment costs and overhead. I provide clear, simple communication about complex technologies, reducing uncertainty around time-based media installations.

Most projects start with a technology list: what you already own, what the artist’s specifications require, should you buy or rent, and which purchases, if needed, will keep serving you after the show closes. From there, we can calculate cable runs, projector positions, speaker placements, and I can produce wiring and installation diagrams and work directly with the artist/studio and your in-house team to see the project through to completion.

Exhibition Installation

A background in technology with the toolkit of a professional art installer — I have over 15 years of experience working directly with museums, artists, galleries, and institutions. I bring my unique skill set to demanding and technically complex projects, where standard solutions don't apply. Specializations include: projection mapping, multi-channel BrightSign programming, video synchronization, multi-channel audio installation, equipment specification and review, and coordination/facilitation between multiple contractors and crews.

Studio–Gallery Liaison

Fluent in both the needs of an artist's studio and the realities of installation — I translate complex technical requirements into clear plans that make sense to preparators, operations staff, and gallery teams. Early involvement helps identify and eliminate problems before they arise on site.

Studio Consulting and Technical Assistance

Whether helping assess the feasibility of a new project or restoring and rebuilding older work, I can help studios meet their specialized technology needs for audio, video, and media-based artwork. I have rebuilt old multi-channel media systems to run on new technology, helped redeploy legacy technology from previous museum exhibitions for new institutions, restored old speaker systems, and written installation manuals ensuring the needs of a given project are clearly communicated to installation teams. If you are unsure where to begin, please feel free to get in touch for a consultation.

About

As an artist myself, I work with museums, artists, cultural institutions, galleries, and private collections to bring the highest possible standard to media and technology installations. My work spans exhibition planning, equipment consulting, fabrication, and on-site installation — with over 15 years of experience across Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, New York, and Chicago.

Phil Peters

Institutional clients include the Portland Art Museum and the Skirball Cultural Center. Gallery clients include Hauser & Wirth, Matthew Marks Gallery, Karma, and François Ghebaly. With private clients throughout Los Angeles and San Francisco. I serve as Pipilotti Rist's West Coast media consultant, and work directly with artist studios for specialized technical and restoration work.

The goal is always the same: a detailed plan developed early, time spent fine-tuning the work, not the technology.
